Cops and police unions certainly love that narrative, but is it true? The
data suggests otherwise. Violent crime is at or near an alltime low, and most cops have never so much as brandished let alone fired their weapons on the job. The overwhelming majority of them don't patrol high crime areas, and even those that do are rarely in any real danger. Fact is, people shooting or attacking cops is pretty rare, even though they would like you to believe they are the equivalent of soldiers patrolling Fallujah.
Statstically speaking, police work isn't even one of the 10 most dangerous jobs out there. Last year only 89 cops were killed in the line of duty....half due to car crashes, slip and falls, or other accidents. It's statistically more dangerous to be a delivery driver or construction worker.
So is this narrative legit, or just an excuse for militaristic behavior by cops who want to think they're some kind of jacked up warrior heroes? It seems more the latter than the former. But perhaps part of the problem is that they think it's the former and they treat their communities the way soldiers treat occupied territory?
